FLAGSTAFF WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER : CARMEN + TOM – PART 1

I’ve known Tom for a long time, dating back to 2002 when we were both Freshmen in college at NAU. I don’t remember exactly how we met because we didn’t even live in the same dorm but I know it came down to Tom being a friend of a friend of a friend or something like that. Either way, Tom and I ended up hanging out with the same group of people on and off throughout our college years. I always liked Tom, even though I didn’t particularly know him as well as some of our other friends. I remember having a conversation with him about his last name and it went something like this:

Me: “Nagy? Isn’t that a Hungarian name?”

Tom: “Yeah, I’m Hungarian.”

Me: “Me too! I never meet anyone with Hungarian heritage!”

Tom: “Yeah, it is rare.”

Me: “How much Hungarian are you?”

Tom: “Full blood.”

Me: “Oh.”

My disappointment at the end of the conversation wasn’t that Tom was full blood Hungarian but that I wasn’t. I’m half Irish, half Hungarian and so, OK. Yes, I am a mutt. But I am less mutt than most Americans! Growing up, I always connected more with the Hungarian side of my family than I did the Irish and from there, always wished I was just only Hungarian. I think the conversation from there ended with me asking Tom how he enjoyed being harry because it is a known fact that Hungarians tend to have lots of hair. Tom and I can attest to that.

I had such a great time shooting Carmen and Tom’s wedding here in Flagstaff. I had fallen out of touch with Tom the previous year or two prior to their wedding and so it was great to be a witness to an old friend’s wedding. They decided to hold the ceremony and reception in their own back yard which made for a fun, laid-back setting and I must say, was perfect for them.

Now, enough talking and on to the shots!

I absolutely loved all the little details of their wedding. Carmen, that talented gal, made most everything that fit into the details category of this wedding. She made the paper pomanders hanging from the trees and the deck. AND SHE MADE THE BOUTONNIERES AND THE BOUQUETS! I type that in all caps because I feel it’s worth the biggest shout-out. I mean, seriously. What a great job she did and knowing that I could never do anything remotely as talented, I have full respect.

I loved Carmen’s simple, yet elegant dress from J. Crew.

I loved the way the back yard was decorated. It made for a simple and rustic feel. Swoon!

More to come tomorrow so stay tuned!

Michelle Koechle - Thanks! I agree! Haha! Seriously though, I look back at the photos I took even just a year ago and cringe. Practice makes perfect for sure. :)

Stevie - Love, love, LOVE! You are incredible :-)

That bouquet is gorgeous, and the dress is so similar to mine!

I love the simplicity of it, too.
